Wow! It is a bit surreal to know that I have taken the leap of faith in starting a business. As many of you know, I have spent the last several years conceptualizing, discussing and designing what I would one day hope to be my own business. After many years, some tough nights, lots of reflecting and long days, I feel that the time is now for me to chart my path in starting my own business. I have talked with many of you about this feeling of not feeling fully fulfilled in my current work. While I love my current job, the students I work with, and my current program, I have felt the need to do something more. My mentors have helped me to realize that we must do our part to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. While I believe my current work helps to fulfill this duty, I know that there is more work that needs to be done and for that reason and many more, I believe the time is now for me to do my part as an educational leader to create a more just, equitable and inclusive society.

For this business, I believe there has to be a multimodal approach to correcting some of the injustices that exist in the educational system. My current doctoral research and passion, contemplative practice, which some would classify as mindfulness has been near and dear to my heart. My business, The Mindful Brotha, hopes to use the idea of mindfulness to support the needs of teachers, parents and students. This multifaceted approach will provide consultations with teachers of all levels to think about their pedagogical philosophy and instruction, provide support to first generation parents and host workshops for Black and Latino men. I would encourage you to check out the website for additional information about these activities. Additionally, this website will also provide resources, guest bloggers, and interviews with various leaders within educational and related fields around mindfulness, and in particular mindfulness for young men of color.

I hope that this website can be a space for all of us to share in community to help build a more just, equitable and inclusive society. I am hopeful that all of you will be able to share advice, suggestions and resources to help create a space for all of us to share in building better communities for everyone. This is truly a rewarding and humbling experience to start an organization that is dedicated to creating a more just, equitable and inclusive environment. For all of those who have continued to support me and provide words of wisdom, I appreciate it so much! Thank you for taking the time to support this adventure of mine and I look forward to working with all of you in the future!

With blessing, love and peace,

Marlon Blake - The Mindful Brotha
